Your CSCA subject selection directly affects your application track and study plan. This article sorts out how to pick suitable subjects for your reference.

I. Overview of CSCA Subjects

There are four subjects: Academic Chinese, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.

⚠️ The required subjects depend on your target university. Please check the university admission brochure or contact the admissions office for confirmation.

It has two tracks: Arts Chinese and Science Chinese. Only Chinese test papers are available. Applicants for Chinese Government Scholarship undergraduate programs or Chinese-taught majors must select the corresponding Chinese track based on their intended major.

Note: Bachelor of Chinese language applicants with a valid HSK Level 4 certificate are exempted from Academic Chinese.

Mathematics is mandatory for all majors. It assesses foundational mathematics and logical thinking. Both Chinese and English test papers are available.

These two are elective subjects. Universities set requirements according to their training objectives. Generally, applicants for science, engineering, agriculture and medicine majors need at least one of them. Physics and Chemistry offer both Chinese and English versions. You may choose the paper language matching your program’s instruction language.

II. Subject Selection by Major Category

Universities set their own CSCA requirements. The rules below are common practices for preliminary reference only:

Typical requirements: Arts Chinese + Mathematics

Typical requirements: Arts Chinese + Mathematics. You may focus preparation on these two subjects.

Typical requirements: Science Chinese + Mathematics, plus at least one elective from Physics / Chemistry. The elective choice varies by university and major. Physics is commonly required for Mechanical, Electrical and Civil Engineering. Chemistry is often required for Chemical Engineering and Pharmaceutical Engineering.

Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine: Academic Chinese (Arts or Science track) + Mathematics
Other medicine majors: Academic Chinese (Arts or Science track) + Mathematics + Chemistry. Some majors require both Physics and Chemistry.

Important reminder: Requirements for the same major differ across universities. Always follow the target university’s latest admission brochure. The examples below show 2026 CSCA requirements for illustration only. Double-check the official brochure before application.

Example: For Materials Science and Engineering, Harbin Institute of Technology requires Science Chinese, Mathematics and Physics. Fudan University requires Science Chinese, Mathematics and Chemistry. Always verify up-to-date university rules.

III. 3-step Check to Avoid Wrong Subject Selection

University requirements are the sole criterion. Follow these three steps to avoid mistakes:

The international undergraduate brochure clearly states CSCA subject requirements for each major. Locate the CSCA section carefully. If the latest brochure is not released yet, you may refer to the previous year’s requirements for early preparation.

The instruction language determines whether you need Academic Chinese and which paper version to take.

• Chinese-taught program: Chinese test paper
• English-taught program: Academic Chinese is generally waived, but Mathematics remains mandatory

Based on the first two steps, confirm all subjects and paper language for your exam registration.

CSCA normally holds 5 sessions per year. Extra special sessions may be added. Register on the official website www.csca.cn.
