Time Out Ranks the World's Best Cities for Cycling
Cycling to work or school can be a fun, eco-friendly way to save money and stay in shape. And a new survey has found the best cities in the world to do it!
Time Out surveyed 24,000 people globally about how easy it is to cycle around their cities. And the top city, according to local residents, is Cambridge in the UK.
This small city — and its famous university — are about 80 kilometers north of London. It has flat roads and is in the driest part of the UK, meaning residents don't have to worry too much about getting wet when they ride. And 83.2% of locals told Time Out that Cambridge is a "good" or "amazing" city for cycling.
Montreal in Canada came second, with 82.5% of residents calling it "good" or "amazing" for cycling.
Montreal has over 1,000 kilometers of bike paths and bike lanes. And while it's famous for getting lots of snow, many of the city's bike paths and lanes are still kept clear in winter. The city's main bike share system, BIXI, is even used by one-quarter of residents.
In third place on Time Out's list is Copenhagen, Denmark, with 79.2% of residents calling it "good" or "amazing" for cycling.
With almost 400 kilometers of bicycle paths — and a number of cycling bridges over Copenhagen Harbor — Denmark's capital is known as the world's best capital city for cyclists. In fact, 45% of all trips to work or school in the city are made by bicycle!
Next on the list is Shanghai, China. The city's high "cycling score" is perhaps helped by the Pudong Riverfront Greenway — a 24-kilometer car-free path along the east side of the Huangpu River. It's complemented by the Huangpu Riverfront Greenway, an 8-kilometer path on the river's opposite side.
